Who we are

uHambo Heritage Project (NPO)

NPO: 313-250

uHambo — “the journey” — is a registered South African non-profit organisation. We design and guide multi-day experiences in the country's most significant natural heritage landscapes, combining wilderness time with eco-therapy, oral storytelling and traditional craft.

A note from our founder

I watched people arrive at the mountain carrying things they had no words for — grief, exhaustion, a quiet sense of being lost. And I watched the mountain take it from them. Not quickly, and not neatly, but truly.

uHambo exists because that experience should not be a luxury. Everyone deserves to stand on ground older than memory and remember that they belong to something.

What guides us

Reconnection

We believe people are not broken — they are disconnected. Our work restores the relationship between a person, their ancestors and the land.

Community first

Journeys are hosted with village partners. Accommodation, food, guiding and craft income stays in the communities that welcome us.

Heritage stewardship

We travel gently through sites of extraordinary geological and cultural value, and we teach every group to leave them stronger.

Where we work

The Makhonjwa mountains and the forests of Limpopo

The Barberton Makhonjwa range holds some of the oldest exposed rock on the planet — a 3.6 billion year old record of the Earth's first crust. Walking it is a lesson in scale. In Limpopo, the indigenous forest of Makgoebaskloof offers a softer, greener counterpoint: water, canopy and stillness.

We host with the uMphakatsi Peace Eco-Village, where visitors sleep in traditional homesteads and learn weaving and craft from resident artisans using recycled materials.
